Odyssey VIP, the latest addition to the “infamous” Odyssey Group”

This week, in the spotlight, thanks to many consumer complaints, Odyssey VIP. www.odysseyvip.net is the latest addition to a large range of Odyssey dubious resale websites with different names, different addresses, not always different telephone numbers and same text on the websites.

Based presumably in Mallorca, they quote a post box as a contact address:

Apartado 13017, postcode 7013 Palma de Mallorca. This address is the same for Odyssey Group SL (www.groupodyssey.com), Odyssey Worldwide (www.odysseyworldwide.net) and Odyssey VIP (www.odysseyvip.net)

The range of telephone numbers used are:

0845 302 5752

0845 108 5556

0872 426 0264

Using the Cold Call approach this company offers the customer a guaranteed sale for their timeshare membership and they even put in writing that they already have a 30% of deposit from the buyer.

In the same letter they do explain the following:

Sellers are required to pay a retainer of €1,495.00 as a guarantee of surrendering the ownership deeds on receipt of funds reaching your bank account. At this point the retainer is refunded in full. Failure to complete the sale process will result in your retainer being withheld”

Where on their website it is pointed out that their staff both in sales and customer services is highly experienced (quote: Our experience and in-depth knowledge of the timeshare market make us an asset to both the purchaser and the vendor”, it is quite surprising they are obviously not aware of the current timeshare directive.

This (new) Timeshare Directive was implemented into national law by most European Union Member States on Wednesday 23rd February 2011. This new legislation replaces the current European Timeshare Directive, and goes one step further by including timeshare exchange, fractional, resale, and holiday clubs (i.e. long term holiday products). The very fact that they take a deposit and not respect the 14 days cooling off period goes against this EU Timeshare Directive does not look very trustworthy.

Have you been called by Odyssey VIP? We would like to know! Please leave your comment on the blog.

Thanks.

MY 80 YEAR OLD MOTHER (WHO HAS DEMENTIA) HAS BEEN TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF SEVERAL TIMES & HARASSED RELENTLESSLY BY THESE VULTURES OF THE TIMESHARE RESALE SCAM INDUSTRY. IN EACH CASE; I WAS ABLE TO RETRIEVE HER MONEY WITH THE HELP OF CREDIT CARD CO. IT TOOK MONTHS TO GET A RESOLUTION. SHE WAS THEN CONTACTED BY ANOTHER COMPANY THAT WANTED A CASHIER’S CHECK FOR $2260! I TOLD HER WE MIGHT AS WELL TAKE THE MONEY OUT OF HER ACCOUNT & FLUSH IT DOWN THE TOILET! LUCKILY, SHE LISTENED TO ME & DID NOT SEND THEM ANYTHING. I HAVE BLOCKED HER PHONE FROM RECEIVING CALLS FROM ALL 800, 888,866,877 AND OTHER AREA CODES I COULD I COULD LINK TO THESE SCAM ARTISTS. BE AWARE-IT APPEARS THEY SELL THE NUMBERS & TARGET THE ELDERLY…PROTECT YOUR LOVED ONES AND YOURSELVES FROM THESE LOW-LIFES! KEEP YOUR MONEY!!!

I was contacted this afternoon by Odessey VIP and was offered £5,200 for each week by a Pauline Collins on 0872 426 0264. Her story was she had 16 weeks and required another 4.

The catch was I had to pay them 1495 euros up front and the payment had to be via VISA to protect all the parties involved. My reply was did not have my VISA card with me as it sound to good to be true.

Another bogus Timeshare Company with false promises.

  4. Tony Fleming says:

Had a call from this Mr Doyle, said ” would i be interested in selling my timeshares” told him i would gladly let him have them for nothing, he later rang back to say he had a buyer and would pay £3500 for each, then came the catch, as i wasnt prepared to travel to Spain, where he and his vulchers would get the chance to scam me of money, that it could be done by post and that nothing would happen until the buyers money was in my account, but i would have to pay 1.495 euro’s just for when the couriers come to my house to take the deeds from me then the money would be put back into my account, yeah and the Queen is coming to tea tonight, BE CAREFUL OUT THERE, IF ITS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE THEN IT’S NOT, interesting read from the replies, if anyone genuingly wants two weeks in Florida for nothing for the rest of their lives then get in contact. by the way the maintenance and taxes are $900.00 per week,PER YEAR AND RISING, thanks for all the good info, well done.

Many thanks for your comment on our blog. Glad you have decided not to pay them! Did they call you back?

  7. Alex Linnington says:

I reported Odyessey VIP to the RDO on 10th June as I was initially also cold called by Michael Doyle on 08th June 2011, I was offered just over £9000 for my 80 Diamond Club points which seemed high and unlikely however I was not suspicious until I was asked for deposit money to guarantee that I was committed to the sale. I fobbed them off claiming that I did not have my credit cards with me and to call me the following day. I checked them out on google and then checked the RDO website to see if what they had offered in their letter agreed with the laws governing resale of timeshare, suprisingly they were not members of RDO, when Michael called back he was insistent that they did not need to be as Spanish law guaranteed that any money they took on credit card was safe and would of course be returned to me on completion as they were governed by Sapnish laws. Strangely enough they have not contacted me since….although they did re email me the offer letyter again.

Hope this action of reporting them helps others to save themselves time, stress and money..

    • Thank you very much for your comment on this blog.
It isn’t surprising that when you challenge these telemarketers like you did, they quickly back off. They are definitely not prepared for complicated questions or maybe the commission is not worth going through this stress full conversation and they prefer to move on to the next victim on their list.
Thanks again for your comment as this will help other people in the future to be more than aware of these kind of companies!

  8. Duncan Depledge says:

I have been contacted by Odyssey VIP today (June 9th) to say they have a buyer for my appartment at £3500. When I queried that seemed a lot of money, he told me it was a Swedish couple and we all know the Swedes have plenty of money! So I told him that with all the scams one hears about I would like to check the company out first. Very glad I did having read the comments here and on other websites. I wonder if he will ring back.

    • Dear Duncan,

Many thanks for your comment here on the blog. I am glad you didn’t go for the ” wealthy Swedish buyers” pitch. Sometimes it looks they are running out of new and credible pitches and they come up with these kind of nonsense.
Glad you also checked the web first and found our blog!
Always be suspicious about cold calls, that’s the best way to avoid being scammed.

  9. Melanie Crossland says:

I’ve just been contacted by them today supposedly a Michael Doyle! Supposedly they’d just received an offer of £3800 for our timeshare week. My response was ‘what on earth do they want to offer so much money for?’. His response was that he wasn’t anything to do with Sales so he had no idea!!! He told me he needed an immediate answer of ‘yes’ to enable the sale to take place but I told him I’d have to check with my husband first. Really I wanted to check the internet as I was 99% sure they were a fraudulent company. I’ve had 3 fraudulent companies now contact me within the past 2 weeks so I’m getting quite used to making the excuses to check them out!!! Cheapest thing seems that we’re better off keeping the timeshare or seeing if we can give it away!!!!

    • Dear Melanie,

Thanks for your comment! I am glad you didn’t go for the offer straight away and decided to check the web first. That’s the best thing to do nowadays with so many bogus companies around and harassing people on the phone.
Of course, they might sound very convincing and the money they offer always comes in handy…but really, a cold call and “decision now needed”, it does make all the alarm bells ring.
If anybody else calls you, let us know, we need this information to keep on warning the consumers.

      Thanks again,

  10. Michelle Barrett-Chapman says:

I was contacted by them in May this year offering to sell my timeshare. I checked them out on the web and they seemed legitimate as they have a website. I paid €1495.18 on the 11th May. On the 2nd June I was contacted by Visions of the World who informed me that legitimate companies don’t cold call and directed me to TATOC. Unfortunately, they weren’t available at the time so I started to do some more research and found this website. Having read all the above info I have contacted my credit card company and I’m trying to get my money back. I am feeling angry and stupid but they really did come across as very legitimate.

  11. Terry Hill says:

They called me a couple of days ago and said they would try and find a buyer for my timeshare. Two days later they say they have one for £3250.
Thankfully I told them that before I went ahead I wanted to check them out on Google. I now can not wait for them to call me back after a little research has shown what a bunch of con artists they are!

    • Dear Mr. Hill,

Thank you for your message regarding Odyssey VIP on our blog.

We are very pleased to hear that thanks to our article on the blog you have not paid any money to this bogus resale company. You saved yourself a lot of grief I can assure you!

It is important to know that a new Timeshare Directive was implemented into national law by most European Union Member States on Wednesday 23rd February 2011. This new legislation replaces the current European Timeshare Directive, and goes one step further by including timeshare exchange, fractional, resale, and holiday clubs (i.e. long term holiday products).

The very fact that they will ask you for a deposit on the next call and not respect the 14 days cooling off period goes against the new EU Timeshare Directive and proofs the fact they are not working by the rules.

Thanks again for your comment. You know now where we are so please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Yes I was contacted by Odyssey and am in the process of trying to get my retainer money back. They are threatening to take me to court and I have sought legal advice over this. The first’buyer’ fell through as I suspected would happen but they will not listen to anything I have to sat on the phone. To be honest I am worried.
