Last Sunday the 10th of November 2013 we could read in the local Spanish press an article based on the opinion of the President of the Tenerife #CabildoDeTenerife (local authorities) @Carlosislatener
The bottom-line of the article is the ongoing conflict between the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife because of tourism licenses for 4 star hotels requested by the first island.
But this is not the purpose of our article.
We would like to reflect on a phrase that D. Carlos Alonso dropped in this article on tourism in Tenerife: “…, the true engine of the economy of the archipelago, Tenerife has managed to do well and that’s why we are the leaders.”
We agree that tourism is the real engine of the economy of the archipelago, and also that they are leaders in the number of tourists received, but where we disagree is in who have known how to do things right.
Mr. President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, in Europe there are thousands of tourists who have been devastated by alleged scams, while enjoying their holidays mainly in Arona and Adeje.
Devastated at being deceived by unscrupulous companies that sell long-term tourism products using deceptive practices. Many times in an unfair and illegal manner.
These products are not Timesharing but long-term holiday products, with a cost of several thousand euros. These products are sold with promises that systematically are unfulfilled.
These tourists feel deceived, abused and cheated. And they wonder, if tourism is the real engine of the economy of the archipelago, why do local authorities allow these pseudo-illegal activities?
Where are the tourist inspections from the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands? Why do the OMIC offices neglect these issues?
They might have done well in certain areas of tourism, but not in this one. Understandably the image of the island of Tenerife is being damaged by these companies. And this is not a recent issue. They have been running for several years. What does the local government do to prevent it? There are too many unanswered questions
