The Information Advice Bureau, dubious “helpline” for Timeshare owners


A new cold calling Company has been brought to our attention this week by the name of Information Advice Bureau.

This company presents themselves as “Mediation Company” for timeshare owners.

Information Advice Bureau has a website which was registered at the beginning of March 2014.

The only contact details on the web are a telephone number 0845 542 0135 and an email address:

On the website from Information Advice Bureau they explain the purpose of the company in the following way:

“Here at Information Advice Bureau our aim is to source information from all timeshare owners, collecting their experiences within the timeshare industry, whether those experiences have been good or bad.   We then help guide them to various companies who are experienced in dealing with the complaints generated in certain areas of the timeshare industry…”

The companies they refer to though are certainly known to Mindtimeshare! RCI Action Group, Timeshare Law and Timeshare Release.

Such a “coincidence” that at least 2 of these companies, RCI Action Group and Timeshare Release are directly connected with ITRA the International Timeshare Refund Action.

So what happens here then? Yet again ITRA has come up with a new name for the same set up? Instead of making use of their “reputable name” as they claim they prefer to use a new one nobody knows and contact consumers as Information Advice Bureau?

Yet again innocent Timeshare consumers are made to believe they are speaking to genuine companies who want to help, and then they are invited over to meetings where the most important thing is certainly NOT signing them up for a No Win No Fee Claim?

Don’t be confused by the name of Information Advice Bureau because this is just another wolf in sheep’s clothing…

    Feeling disappointed after reading the comments on this thread.

    I went to a meeting in Exeter at 48 Queen Street in October 2014 which was a 200 mile return road trip. We cold called by a James Baxter but met with a chap called Benjamin who informed us that there was a class action suite going through the EU courts and we could join it. We had an excellent chance of all of our payments being refunded on our Villacana Timeshare. It was free to join the suite. However, we would still own the timeshare week. If we wanted to get out of that it would cost £4500 approximately. We declined the ‘get out of timeshare’ but signed up for the free no win no fee class action. We had no more updates or contact until today (Fri July 31st).
    I returned a call to a June from ‘The Information Bureau’ who was extremely personable and a very competent and credible operator.
    Basically she also phished for information during the call. She wanted to know how much I had been quoted for ‘get out of timeshare’ last year. I mentioned it was too much at £4500.
    I now have an e mail offering this same ‘guaranteed’ service for £3400. I am asked to pay £450 up front to start the process by credit card. She helpfully and credibly points out that I’m covered under section 75 of the consumer credit act so in the unlikely event of them being unable to extricate us to our satisfaction from our Macdonald’s resort timeshare agreement we have a 100% guaranteed claim against the credit card company so cannot lose any money.
    Apparently I must decide by Monday as the ‘claims organisers’ are only able to lower the price since they are handling many Macdonald owner claims at present together through there Spanish Agents.
    I will have to go to a notary public in Truro to finalise the legal process in about ten weeks after I’ve paid the first installment.
    I notice the expected EU court settlement judgement is now expected in 2016 rather than 2015!
    If this succeeds we would get all our money back.
    I don’t expect folk to work on my behalf for free, but this feels too good to be true. I’m thinking of contacting the credit card company to get their take on this. Just don’t want the hassle of having hopes raised and then dashed again.

    Waiting for email for appointment in Manchester, which they said would come before close of business. Still waiting 2 days day later. Tried ringing back but getting no reply. Are they legitimate or not ?

    I had a call the other evening (29/01/15) from Matthew James at Information Advice Bureau. As commented by other writers he had told me that the company was setting up a court action against timeshare organisations. They had about 18,000 people already signed up and the action had been approved by the European court. We were talking for about an hour and I gave him some basic information about my timeshare and other RCI points. He advised me straight away that I had a good chance of a claim. It all sounded very plausible, but as I had had calls like this in the past I was sceptical.
    He told me the next step would be to attend a meeting with their legal team. Their nearest office to my home was in Langley, about an hour away. He offered me an appointment for the following morning. I said I was not available at short notice, but he was very keen for me to attend as soon as possible. I eventually agreed to a meeting in a weeks time (I thought this would give me a chance to check them out).
    Matthew said he would send a email confirming the appointment and someone would call me nearer the date to confirm the name of the person I would be meeting. He would ring me back the following evening to confirm that I had received the email.
    I did not receive the email before he called so they sent it again. This time I have it. He confirmed that someone would call me next week and said if I had any further queries to call him on 08450950009.
    As soon as I googled Information Advice Bureau I came to this web site. I will definitely not now be attending the meeting and will reply to IAB email.

    Have been contacted by this company i.e. Information Advice bureau today and spoke ingreat dtail with a guy called Nick Heap who gave me a tel no 0845 0950009 and he is going to phone me back to see if I qualify which Im sure I will according to your info about this company I feel that I will give this offer the no no

    I was called last week, by the Information Advice Bureau, giving same info as previous callers, all sounded very plausible and an advisor would call this week. She (Carol) duly phoned on Monday and went through the same sort of details and seemed very genuine, would call back on Tuesday to see if the advisors think I have a claim as part of this litigation against the Timeshare Industry, which indeed she did and stated that we had a claim. Arranged a meeting in Chesterfield for the 17th Dec, had to be soon as the registration was closing at the end of December. I was asked to confirm a reply to an email which as yet I haven’t received. A little doubt at the back of my mind prompted me to check the internet before going to this meeting and lo and behold I stumble upon this site pretty quickly. Feeling really disappointed and let down, wont be going to the meeting now, just need to find another way to get rid of this wretched Timeshare week

    Attended meeting in Chesterfield today. Luckily were prepared for this being a sc**. Began by telling us they were putting together a compensation claim (as said by Info Advice Bureau) then moved on to possibility of contract cancellation. Fee would be £4100. When we said “no” atmosphere changed noticeably. If you can be “tough” and hold out against them it’s worth attending just to waste their time and effort!! If you might be tempted avoid at all costs.

    I had a call yesterday from Nick of the Information Advice Bureau on 0845-095-0009, who said that, as I own at two resorts (including DRI), I had a valid claim for around £40,000, of which they would take 40%, leaving me with about £25k. All sounded very plausible, but have been advised by Mindtimeshare that the company is very “dubious”. It wants me to attend a meeting at Manchester, probably next week. I have read all the above and cannot find a report from anyone who HAS attended such a meeting. I am told that it is very unlikely to result in a “no win no fee” situation, and that i should consider carefully whether to attend. “Leave your credit cards at home” is also part of the advice. Am waiting for Nick to call back about the meeting in Manchester.

    I have just received a phone call from James Baxter and he was very persuasive. He has sent me an email but he hasn’t spoken about a meeting yet….SO GLAD I checked it with you guys. So thank you all for putting your experiences on here. I will now refuse to speak with them any further.

    I have just come off the phone to these people: she got very nervous when challenged. She said that DRI has had to give them all the contact details of their members as they had been found guilty of misselling points and charging over the inflation rate for maintenance fees. She said that we would be entitled to a lump sum and it would not affect our DRI membership. She asked when we bought e.g. GVC, Sunterra or Diamond and how much we paid over the years for the points and the maintenance. I refused to answer any of the questions over the phone and asked her to send me something through the post. She said they “didn’t work that way” and that this was a one time offer. Smelled like sc** to me. I have telephoned DRI with the information.

    had a call this week and set up a meeting in Chesterfield for next Friday. Was abit suspicious and now I have checked them out on your site I will let then know I will not be attending. On their email confirmation is says that for a fee they can stop you having to pay any more fees, this is how they get their money from you.

    I have been contacted by James over the last couple of weeks trying to get me to attend a meeting to claim back every penny we have spent buying points and management fees with DRI over the last 10 years, Has anyone ever attended one of these meetings, and has anyone ever had a successful claim over mis-selling with a timeshare company?

    jeg så på den blå avis en reklame for dette selskab som selvfølgelig er for godt til at være sandt.
    Carmen ringede til mig og gennem snart 3 mdr. fik hun en masse info omkring min timeshare som jeg selvfølgelig gerne vil ud af…..
    Vi aftalte at jeg skulle tale min exmand og derefter rejse over til London og få den afviklet, det ville foregå på den måde at de ville kræve et beløb og kontrakten opløst , og vi skulle begge med der over.
    Min exmand fik sendt noget info med information advice bureau og her kom alarm klokkerne til at ringe…..

    I’ve had several calls from these people using 3 different numbers 08455420135, 02033320058 and today it was 00501 and left a voicemail from Matthew at the Information advice bureau. Told me all the same stuff about claiming money back etc etc. when I try ringing back I can’t get through. I was invited to an office in Chesterfield but I asked them to email me more info as Chesterfield is a fair journey for me. Needless to say I received no email. They are very convincing as they knew all my details regarding my DRI membership. Would be great to know it’s legitimate and not another scam!

    ive been called today by this company – i dont know why i pick the phone up sometimes. Very convincing conversation with matthew, who told me that there is a court case already going through against DRI (due for Feb 2015, with almost 18000 people already part of the action) and they are trying to generate as much support for the consumers as possible by getting more to join this action. Gave some details around where we bought and when, and the type of things we were told, and he thinks we have a good case! He will be calling back with a time to visit their chesterfield office to talk legals with someone, but i need to be made aware that this meeting may have to take place in barcelona, which is where their main office is. They have 5 offices inthe UK apparently. Got the same phone number (0845) and email address as above, and will get a call back in the next few days.

    A question for anyone out there who may be listening – if these guys are less than genuine, and the companies on their website they have listed as being succesful, are less than genuine – is there anyone out there who can help me get rid of my points??

    Called today by Information Advice Bureau but telephone No was 02033320058 not the 0845 above. Guy said based in Glasgow, but code for Glasgow is 0141! Did not give any details and told them I’d report the call to TPS. And we don’t even own a timeshare!!!!!

      That number called our office yesterday (they hung up upon answering) and just now. This time the caller identified themselves as the Information Advice Bureau. Told them we were not interested.

    Having given them telephone information sat week, I have just made an appointment at their offices in Langley as I was wondering how they operated. I had asked a number of questions, like which firm of lawyers they used and was told none had been set up yet! Having read this information I don’t think I will bother to attend.

    Had these guys on the phone yesterday (12th May 2014), I gave them some very vague information, told them I couldn’t remember exact year I first purchased timeshare, I couldn’t remember what I paid for it.
    Couldn’t remember the dates for additional timeshare purchases etc, etc, All I gave them was the timeshare company name and my current maintenance costs.
    They said “Great”, we will forward your information to our claim advisors and they will advise if you have a valid claim or not”.
    Surprise, Surprise, they phoned back today to tell me, “Yes, all your purchases and every maintenance payment you have ever paid can be claimed back – Every penny!”.
    The next step will be to attend a meeting with a claims advisor at one of their regional offices who will go through everything with me and begin the claim process.
    I asked for some information in writing to support the claims they were making regarding the refund of all my timeshare purchases and maintenance payments.
    The guy I was taling to “Greg” (I think) offered to email me some information then call me back in a few days to set up the appointment with the claim advisor.
    I gave him an old email address that doesn’t work anymore, lets see how long it takes him to phone me back.

    These guys have been on to me for a little while, only today they wanted to set up an appointment for me at Churchill House in Slough which straight away says ‘ITRA’, probably by another name. I am awaiting their reply…
